Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical issues during repair.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, jack and jack stands.
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access to the steering components.
  • Detach the tie rod ends from the steering rack using a tie rod separator tool.
  • Disconnect the power steering fluid lines from the rack. Use a container to catch any leaking fluid.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mountings and carefully remove it from the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Examine the steering rack for wear or damage.
  • If the rack is repairable, replace the old seals with new ones. Clean the surfaces where seals will be installed.
  • Follow the manufacturer's specifications for seal installation.
4. Install the Steering Rack
  • Position the repaired or new steering rack back into its mounting location.
  • Secure it with the mounting bolts to the specified torque settings from the service manual.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and ensure they are tightened properly to prevent future leaks.
  • Reattach the tie rod ends, making sure they are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Funnel.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid as specified in the owner’s manual.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
6. Final Checks
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the vehicle's battery.
  • Start the engine and check for any leaks around the steering rack and connections.
