Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is cool.
  • Gather tools, including a socket set, pliers, and a cooling system pressure tester.
2. Coolant Level Check
  • Open the coolant reservoir cap carefully to prevent burns.
  • Check the coolant level; if low, add the appropriate Volvo-approved coolant mixture.
3. Thermostat Replacement
  • Remove the Thermostat:
    • Drain the coolant from the radiator until the level is below the thermostat.
    • Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing using a socket set.
    • Remove the thermostat housing bolts and lift off the housing along with the thermostat.
  • Install New Thermostat:
    • Clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat housing and engine block.
    • Position the new thermostat in place and reinstall the housing.
    • Tighten the housing bolts to the manufacturer-specified torque (consult repair manual).
4. Water Pump Inspection
  • Inspect the Water Pump:
    • Remove the drive belt to access the water pump.
    • Check for leaks or a wobbly pulley; replace if damaged.
  • Replace the Water Pump (if necessary):
    • Remove the water pump mounting bolts and pull the pump out.
    • Clean the mounting surface, install the new pump, and tighten bolts to the specified torque.
5. Radiator and Fan Check
  • Ensure the radiator is clean and free of debris.
  • Test the radiator fan operation by turning on the AC or observing fan engagement during engine operation.
  • Replace the radiator fan motor if it fails to operate.
