Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery for safety if working on electrical components.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level.
  • If low, top off with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • If the fluid is dirty or contaminated, drain and flush the system, then refill.
3. Replace Worn Steering Components
  • Steering Rack and Tie Rod Ends:

    1. Lift the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
    2. Remove the wheel to access the steering components.
    3. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle using a tie rod end puller.
    4. Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts.
    5. Replace the steering rack with a new unit, tightening to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
    6. Reattach the tie rod ends to the steering knuckle.
  • CV Joints and Axles:

    1. Inspect the CV boots for tears; if damaged, replace the CV axle.
    2. Remove the axle nut using a socket wrench.
    3. Disconnect the axle from the wheel hub and the transmission.
    4. Install the new CV axle and secure it with the new axle nut to the specified torque.
4. Check and Replace Wheel Bearings (if necessary)
  • Lift the vehicle and remove the wheel where the noise is occurring.
  • Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and shake it. If there is play, the wheel bearing may need replacement.
  • Remove the brake caliper and rotor to access the wheel bearing.
  • Use a bearing puller to remove the old bearing and install the new one, ensuring proper alignment and lubrication.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Test drive the vehicle to ensure that the grinding noise is resolved.
