Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Wheel chocks, jack, jack stands, lug wrench, brake pad thickness gauge, and safety goggles.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the front or rear wheel where you will inspect the brakes.
  • Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel completely.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Tools Required: Socket set.
  • Remove the caliper mounting bolts using the socket set.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Do not allow it to hang by the brake line; support it with a bungee cord or similar.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads
  • Check the thickness of the brake pads. If they are less than 1/4 inch (approximately 6 mm), they should be replaced.
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Installation:
    • Install new brake pads in the caliper bracket.
    • Apply a small amount of brake grease to the backing plates of the new pads to reduce noise.
5. Reassemble
  • Reattach the caliper over the new brake pads and secure it with the mounting bolts.
  • Torque the caliper bolts to the manufacturer's specification (consult service manual for specific torque values).
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
6. Lower the Vehicle
  • Remove jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer's torque specification.
