Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit, socket set, jack and jack stands, brake fluid, clean cloths.
  • Safety Warning: Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and securely supported on jack stands before beginning work.
2. Inspect and Replace Brake Fluid
  1. Open the master cylinder reservoir cap and check the brake fluid level.
  2. If the fluid is low or contaminated, draw out the old fluid using a siphon or turkey baster.
  3. Replace with new brake fluid according to the manufacturer’s specifications (DOT 4 recommended for Volvo).
  4. Securely close the master cylinder reservoir cap.
3. Bleed the Brake System
  1. Starting with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder, loosen the bleeder screw on the brake caliper.
  2. Attach a clear hose to the bleeder screw and place the other end into a container to catch old fluid.
  3. Have an assistant press the brake pedal slowly and hold it down.
  4. Open the bleeder screw to allow fluid and air to escape, then close the screw before the pedal is released.
  5. Repeat until only clear fluid is visible, ensuring to periodically check the master cylinder fluid level.
  6. Repeat the process for each wheel, moving from farthest to closest to the master cylinder.
4. Inspect Brake Components
  1. Remove the wheel to access the brake caliper and pads.
  2. Inspect the brake pads for wear; replace if they are below 3mm thickness.
  3. Check rotors for warping or scoring; replace if necessary.
  4. Ensure that caliper pistons and seals are in good condition; replace calipers if they show signs of leakage.
5. Test the Brake System
  1. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
  2. Start the engine and pump the brake pedal several times to restore pressure.
  3. Take the vehicle for a test drive to assess brake performance and pedal feel.
