Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and materials.
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, socket set, transmission fluid, funnel, jack and jack stands.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely supported by jack stands before working underneath.
2. Check and Add Transmission Fluid
  • Remove the transmission dipstick and wipe it clean.
  • Reinsert the dipstick and remove it again to check the fluid level.
  • If low, add the appropriate transmission fluid through the dipstick tube using a funnel until the correct level is reached.
  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then recheck the fluid level.
3. Inspect Transmission Linkage
  • Locate the transmission linkage connected to the gear shifter.
  • Check for any loose or damaged components.
  • Tighten any loose bolts and replace damaged parts as needed.
4. Test Brake Light Switch
  • Locate the brake light switch, typically mounted near the brake pedal.
  • Disconnect the switch harness and use a multimeter to test for continuity when the pedal is pressed.
  • If faulty, replace the brake light switch.
5. Transmission Fluid Change (If Contaminated)
  • Place a drain pan under the transmission to catch fluid.
  • Remove the transmission pan bolts and carefully lower the pan to drain fluid.
  • Replace the transmission filter if applicable and clean the pan.
  • Reinstall the pan with a new gasket and torque bolts to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Refill with the correct type and amount of transmission fluid.
