Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, flathead screwdriver, torque wrench, power steering fluid.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and secure it with jack stands after lifting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues during repair.
2. Remove Steering Rack
  1. Drain Power Steering Fluid: Place a drain pan under the steering rack and remove the drain plug to collect fluid.
  2. Detach Steering Column: Remove the steering column cover and unbolt the universal joint connecting the steering column to the rack.
  3. Disconnect Tie Rods: Use a tie rod puller to separate the tie rods from the steering rack.
  4. Unbolt Steering Rack: Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe and carefully slide it out of position.
3. Inspect and Replace Components
  1. Inspect Steering Rack: Check for internal wear or damage inside the rack. If damaged, replace the steering rack.
  2. Replace Seals: If the steering rack is in good condition but leaking, replace the seals and O-rings.
  3. Install New or Repaired Rack: Position the new or repaired rack back into the subframe and secure it with bolts, torquing them to manufacturer's specifications (typically around 25-30 ft-lbs).
4. Reattach Components
  1. Reconnect Tie Rods: Ensure tie rods are properly aligned and tightened to manufacturer specifications.
  2. Reattach Steering Column: Reconnect the universal joint to the steering column and secure it.
  3. Refill Power Steering Fluid: Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate type of fluid (check owner’s manual for specifications).
5. Final Checks
  1. Bleed Power Steering System: Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times with the engine running to eliminate air from the system.
  2. Reconnect Battery: Reattach the negative battery terminal.
