Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, fluid catch pan, flashlight, socket set, torque wrench, and safety gloves.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal to ensure safety.
2. Fluid Replacement
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir and remove the cap.
    2. Use a fluid catch pan to drain old fluid by removing the return line from the reservoir.
    3. Reconnect the return line and fill the reservoir with fresh power steering fluid (check owner’s manual for the recommended type).
    4. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
    5. Check the fluid level and add more if necessary.
3. Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Disconnect the serpentine belt from the power steering pump pulley.
    2. Remove the bolts securing the power steering pump to its bracket.
    3. Disconnect the fluid lines from the pump using appropriate wrenches.
    4. Install the new power steering pump by reversing the removal steps and ensuring all connections are tight.
    5. Refill the power steering fluid reservoir and bleed the system.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Gear (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Remove the undercarriage splash shield if present to access the steering gear.
    2. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering gear.
    3. Remove any mounting bolts securing the steering gear and disconnect fluid lines.
    4. Install the new steering gear by following the reverse procedure, ensuring proper alignment.
    5. Reconnect tie rods and check for proper torque specifications.
