Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and secure it with wheel chocks.
  • Disconnect the battery before working on the braking system for safety.
2. Inspect and Replace Brake Fluid
  • Remove the cap from the brake fluid reservoir.
  • Check the fluid level and condition; if it’s dirty or below the minimum line, proceed to replace it.
  • Use a turkey baster to remove old fluid from the reservoir.
  • Refill with the recommended brake fluid (DOT 4 for most Volvos).
  • Bleed the brakes to eliminate air from the system (see Step 4).
3. Inspect and Repair Brake Lines and Components
  • Visually inspect all brake lines for signs of wear, corrosion, or leaks.
  • If leaks are found, replace damaged brake lines or connections.
  • Remove the wheel and inspect the brake calipers and pads.
  • Replace worn brake pads or calipers as necessary.
4. Bleed the Brake System
  • Attach a brake bleeder kit to the bleeder valve on the farthest brake from the master cylinder (typically the rear passenger side).
  • Open the bleeder valve and have an assistant pump the brake pedal several times, then hold it down.
  • Close the bleeder valve and instruct the assistant to release the pedal.
  • Repeat the process until clear fluid without air bubbles runs from the bleeder.
  • Continue bleeding each wheel in order: rear passenger, rear driver, front passenger, front driver.
