Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and safety glasses.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues during the repair.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the front or rear wheels where the grinding noise is coming from.
  • Jack the vehicle up and secure it on jack stands. Remove the wheels.
3. Remove Brake Components
  • Brake Pads:

    • Locate the brake caliper and remove the caliper bolts using the socket set.
    • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor and support it using a bungee cord or a hangar (do not let it dangle by the brake line).
    • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Brake Rotor:

    • Remove the caliper bracket if necessary by unbolting it.
    • Slide the brake rotor off the hub. If it’s stuck, gently tap it with a rubber mallet.
4. Inspect and Replace Components
  • Inspect the brake pads; if they are worn down to the indicator, replace them with new ones.
  • Inspect the rotors for any grooves or scoring. If damaged, replace with new rotors.
  • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove any protective coating.
  • Apply anti-seize grease to the brake pad backing and caliper bracket contact points for smoother operation.
5. Reassemble the Braking System
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
  • Reattach the caliper bracket if removed.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
  • Carefully slide the caliper back over the brake pads and secure it by tightening the caliper bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
6. Reinstall Wheels and Lower Vehicle
  • Replace the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and then torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specification.
7. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle.
  • Press the brake pedal a few times to seat the brake pads against the rotors.
