my Volvo XC60 Second Generation (2018-2024) shakes when I brake hard what's wrong

1. Preparation

• Gather tools and parts.
• Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
• Safety: Wear gloves and safety glasses.

2. Remove Wheel

• Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
• Lift the vehicle with a jack and secure it on jack stands.
• Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.

3. Inspect and Replace Brake Components

• Inspect Brake Pads and Rotors

  • Remove the caliper by unscrewing the caliper bolts.
  • Slide the caliper off and support it with a bungee cord (do not hang by the brake line).
  • Check brake pad thickness; replace if worn below 3mm.
  • Inspect the rotor for scoring or warping; replace if necessary.

• Replace Brake Pads and Rotors (if needed)

  • Remove the old pads and install new ones, ensuring they are seated properly.
  • If replacing rotors, unscrew the rotor retaining screws and remove the rotor.
  • Install the new rotor and tighten to manufacturer specifications (typically 10-15 ft-lbs).

4. Reassemble and Reinstall Wheel

• Reinstall the brake caliper and tighten the caliper bolts to specifications (usually around 25-30 ft-lbs).
• Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
• Lower the vehicle and then torque the lug nuts to specifications (usually around 100-110 ft-lbs).
