Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Gather tools and parts: socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, ratchet, and new spark plugs.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Locate the engine cover and remove any clips or bolts securing it.
  • Gently lift the cover off and set it aside.
3. Access Spark Plugs
  • Identify the location of the spark plugs on the engine. In the XC60, they are typically located on the top of the engine.
  • Remove the ignition coil connectors by pressing the release tab and pulling the connector off.
4. Remove Ignition Coils
  • Using a socket wrench, remove the bolts securing the ignition coils and set them aside.
  • Carefully pull the ignition coils straight out of their respective spark plug wells.
5. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to carefully unscrew and remove the old spark plugs from the cylinder head.
  • Inspect the old plugs for wear and damage.
6. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Check the gap on the new spark plugs using a gap gauge. Adjust to manufacturer's specifications if necessary.
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads (if recommended) and carefully install the new spark plugs by hand.
  • Torque the new spark plugs to the manufacturer’s specified torque value (usually around 15 lb-ft, but verify in the service manual).
7. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Place the ignition coils back into their respective positions and secure them with bolts.
  • Reconnect the ignition coil connectors until they click into place.
8. Reinstall Engine Cover
  • Align the engine cover and secure it with any bolts or clips that were removed.
9. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
