Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the replacement.
  • Tools Required:
    • OBD-II scanner
    • Ratchet and socket set (usually 22mm or 7/8” for O2 sensor)
    • Torque wrench
    • Pliers
    • Wire brush (if necessary for cleaning)
    • Safety glasses and gloves
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Disconnect Battery
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent any electrical shorts.
  • Safety Warning: Always disconnect the battery before working on electrical components.
3. Locate the Oxygen Sensor
  • Identify the location of the oxygen sensor. For the XC60, there may be one or two sensors: one upstream (pre-catalytic converter) and one downstream (post-catalytic converter).
  • Refer to the service manual for exact locations if needed.
4. Remove the Old Oxygen Sensor
  • Use the ratchet and socket to carefully unscrew the oxygen sensor from the exhaust pipe.
  • If the sensor is stuck, apply penetrating oil and allow it to sit for a few minutes before attempting to remove it again.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling it off.
5. Install the New Oxygen Sensor
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new oxygen sensor to prevent it from seizing in the future.
  • Screw the new sensor into place by hand to avoid cross-threading, and then tighten it with the ratchet and socket.
  • Connect the electrical connector until it clicks securely into place.
6. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
7. Clear Error Codes
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear any existing error codes from the vehicle’s system.
  • Safety Warning: Ensure all tools are removed from the engine bay before starting the vehicle.
