Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and materials.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves for protection.
2. Gather Tools and Parts
  • Tools Required:

    • Brake bleeder kit or vacuum pump
    • Wrench set (for brake bleeder screws)
    • Funnel
    • Torque wrench (if applicable)
  • Parts Required:

    • New brake fluid (DOT 4 recommended for Volvo XC60)
3. Remove Old Brake Fluid
  • Locate the brake fluid reservoir under the hood.
  • Use a siphon or turkey baster to remove old brake fluid from the reservoir. Dispose of it properly.
  • Fill the reservoir with new brake fluid up to the maximum fill line.
4. Bleed Brakes
  • Attach a clear hose to the brake bleeder screw on the brake caliper, placing the other end in a container to catch old fluid.
  • Have an assistant pump the brake pedal several times and hold it down.
  • Open the bleeder screw to allow air and old fluid to escape until clear new fluid appears. Close the screw while your assistant maintains pedal pressure.
  • Repeat this process for each brake caliper in the following order: right rear, left rear, right front, left front.
  • Continuously monitor the fluid level in the reservoir during the bleeding process, refilling as necessary.
5. Final Check
  • Once all brakes have been bled, ensure all bleeder screws are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and fill to the maximum line if necessary.
  • Start the engine and depress the brake pedal to ensure it feels firm.
