Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid catch pan, jack stands.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and securely support it with jack stands.
  • Drain the power steering fluid into a catch pan by removing the reservoir cap and hoses.
  • Disconnect the steering linkage from the rack using the appropriate socket/wrench.
  • Remove any brackets or bolts securing the steering rack to the vehicle frame.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out from its mounting position, taking care not to damage adjacent components.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Tools Required: Seal puller, clean rags, torque wrench.
  • Inspect the steering rack seals for wear or damage.
  • If seals are damaged, remove them using a seal puller.
  • Clean the sealing surfaces on the steering rack.
  • Install new seals, ensuring they are seated properly.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Slide the steering rack back into position, aligning it with the mounting holes.
  • Reattach any brackets and secure them with bolts, tightening to specified torque values.
  • Reconnect the steering linkage to the rack.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Reconnect the power steering hoses to the reservoir and rack.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid type.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
6. Check for Leaks
  • Inspect all areas around the steering rack and hoses for any signs of leaks after the vehicle has been operated briefly.
