Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and secured with wheel chocks.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Inspect and Replace Brake Fluid
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid, clean rag, funnel.
  • Check the brake fluid level and condition; if the fluid is discolored or below the minimum level, proceed to replace it.
  • Use a funnel to refill the brake fluid reservoir with the appropriate type (DOT 4 for Volvo).
  • Clean any spilled fluid immediately, as it can damage paint and other surfaces.
3. Bleed the Brakes
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit, wrench (usually 10mm), clear tubing.
  • Start at the brake furthest from the master cylinder (right rear).
    1. Attach the clear tubing to the bleeder screw on the brake caliper.
    2. Have an assistant press the brake pedal several times and hold it down.
    3. Open the bleeder screw to release fluid and air, then close it before the pedal is released.
    4. Repeat until no more air bubbles are visible in the tubing.
    5. Move to the next brake in the following order: left rear, right front, and finally left front.
  • Ensure the reservoir remains filled during this process to prevent air from entering.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Components
  • Tools Required: Torque wrench, socket set, brake cleaner.
  • Remove the wheel to access the brake components.
  • Inspect brake pads for wear; replace if they are below manufacturer specifications.
  • Inspect brake rotors for warping or excessive wear; replace if necessary.
  • Reinstall the wheel and torque to manufacturer specifications.
5. Check and Replace Master Cylinder (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Wrench set, brake fluid, clean rags.
  • If the master cylinder is leaking or malfunctioning, remove it from the brake booster.
  • Install the new master cylinder and ensure it is properly aligned.
  • Refill the brake fluid reservoir and bleed the brakes again to remove any air in the system.
