Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the ignition is off.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Gather Tools and Parts
  • Tools Required:
    • Brake bleeder kit or vacuum pump
    • Wrenches (typically 8mm or 10mm)
    • Container for old brake fluid
    • Funnel
    • Rags for spills
  • Parts Required:
    • New brake fluid (DOT 4 specification recommended for Volvo)
3. Remove Old Brake Fluid
  1. Access the Brake Fluid Reservoir

    • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir.
    • Remove the reservoir cap carefully to avoid contamination.
  2. Extract Old Brake Fluid

    • Use a turkey baster or siphon to remove old brake fluid from the reservoir.
    • Dispose of the old fluid in accordance with local regulations.
4. Replace Brake Fluid
  1. Fill with New Brake Fluid

    • Using a funnel, fill the brake fluid reservoir with new DOT 4 brake fluid until the maximum fill line is reached.
    • Reinstall the reservoir cap securely.
  2. Bleed the Brakes

    • Start at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder (usually the right rear).
    • Attach the brake bleeder kit or vacuum pump to the bleeder screw on the brake caliper.
    • Open the bleeder screw and allow old fluid to flow out into the container until it runs clear, then close the bleeder screw.
    • Repeat this process for each wheel in the order: right rear, left rear, right front, left front.
    • Ensure the brake fluid reservoir is kept topped up during the process.
5. Final Checks
  • After bleeding, check the brake pedal feel; it should be firm.
  • Inspect for any leaks around the calipers and lines.
  • Clean any spilled brake fluid immediately as it can damage paint.
