Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, O-ring sealant.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before starting work to prevent electrical issues. Ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported on jack stands.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  1. Lift the Vehicle: Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  2. Remove Front Wheels: Take off the front wheels to gain access to the steering components.
  3. Disconnect Tie Rod Ends: Use a wrench to loosen and remove the tie rod ends from the steering rack.
  4. Remove Power Steering Lines: Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering rack using a wrench. Be prepared for fluid spills; use a rag to catch any leaking fluid.
  5. Unbolt Steering Rack: Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe using a socket set and carefully lower the rack from its position.
3. Inspect and Replace
  1. Inspect the Steering Rack: Check the steering rack for any signs of wear or damage that necessitates replacement.
  2. Install New Steering Rack: If replacement is needed, position the new steering rack where the old one was, aligning it with the mounting points.
  3. Reattach Steering Rack Bolts: Secure the steering rack by tightening the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque settings.
  4. Reconnect Power Steering Lines: Use O-ring sealant on the threads and secure the power steering lines to the new rack.
  5. Reattach Tie Rod Ends: Connect the tie rod ends back to the steering rack and tighten them securely.
4. Reassemble and Refill
  1. Reinstall Front Wheels: Place the front wheels back on the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
  2. Lower the Vehicle: Carefully remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  3. Refill Power Steering Fluid: Add new power steering fluid to the reservoir to the appropriate level.
