Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, screwdrivers, power steering fluid, clean rags, jack and jack stands.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and ensure the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery for safety.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  1. Lift the Vehicle: Use a jack and jack stands to raise the front of the vehicle.
  2. Remove Front Wheels: Use a socket set to remove the wheels for better access to the steering components.
  3. Disconnect Tie Rods: Remove the cotter pins and nuts from the tie rods, then separate them from the steering rack using a tie rod puller.
  4. Disconnect Power Steering Lines: Place a drain pan under the vehicle to catch any fluid. Use a wrench to disconnect the power steering lines from the steering rack.
  5. Unbolt the Steering Rack: Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe or chassis using the socket set.
3. Install New Steering Rack
  1. Position New Steering Rack: Align the new steering rack with the mounting points and secure it with bolts. Tighten to manufacturer specifications using a torque wrench.
  2. Reconnect Power Steering Lines: Reattach the power steering lines to the new rack and ensure they are tight.
  3. Reconnect Tie Rods: Attach the tie rods to the new steering rack and secure with new cotter pins and nuts.
  4. Reinstall Front Wheels: Mount the wheels back on and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended type of fluid as per the owner’s manual.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
