Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Inspect and Repair Wiring
  • Remove the protective cover from the oxygen sensor wiring harness.
  • Inspect the wires for fraying, breaks, or corrosion.
    • Tools Required: Wire cutters, electrical tape, heat shrink tubing.
  • Repair any damaged wires with solder or appropriate connectors and insulate them with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing.
3. Replace the Upstream Oxygen Sensor
  • Locate the upstream oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold.
  • Use an oxygen sensor socket to unscrew the sensor from its mounting.
    • Tools Required: Oxygen sensor socket, ratchet and extension.
  • Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-coated).
  • Install the new oxygen sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specifications (typically around 30-40 lb-ft).
4. Reconnect Electrical Connections
  • Reconnect the oxygen sensor connector and ensure it clicks into place.
  • Reinstall any protective covers removed during the repair.
5. Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0135 code from the vehicle’s memory.
6. Test Drive
  • Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature.
  • Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure the check engine light does not reappear.
