Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake cleaner, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, torque wrench.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
  • Engage the parking brake for safety.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where the brake pads will be replaced.
  • Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts (usually at the back of the caliper).
  • Use the appropriate socket to remove the caliper bolts.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor; do not disconnect the brake line.
  • Support the caliper using a bungee cord or rope to avoid straining the brake line.
4. Replace the Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Compare the old pads with the new pads to ensure proper fit.
  • Clean the caliper bracket and rotor surface with brake cleaner.
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
5. Compress the Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing.
  • Ensure the piston is fully retracted to accommodate the new, thicker brake pads.
6. Reassemble the Brake Components
  • Place the caliper back over the new brake pads.
  • Reinstall and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 25-35 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
7. Lower the Vehicle
  • Carefully remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Once on the ground, use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 80-90 ft-lbs).
