Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Wheel chocks, jack and jack stands, lug wrench, brake caliper tool, and torque wrench.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off. Engage the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels slightly (do not remove).
  • Use the jack to lift the front of the vehicle and securely place jack stands underneath.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the front wheels.
3. Inspect and Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the brake caliper and identify the caliper bolts.
  • Using the appropriate socket, remove the caliper bolts and gently slide the caliper off the brake pad.
  • Support the caliper using a bungee cord or similar means to avoid straining the brake line.
4. Remove Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of their brackets.
  • Inspect the thickness of the pads; replace if they are below 3mm.
  • If the pads are being replaced, note the orientation and installation method.
5. Install New Brake Pads
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the back of the new pads to prevent squeaking.
  • Slide the new brake pads into the bracket in the same orientation as the old ones.
6. Reassemble Brake Components
  • Reposition the brake caliper over the new pads and ensure it fits properly.
  • Reinstall the caliper bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 25-30 Nm).
  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
7. Lower the Vehicle
  • Carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground using the jack.
  • Once on the ground, use the torque wrench to properly torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 120 Nm for the Passat B8).
