Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Use jack stands to safely lift the vehicle.
2. Remove Wheel
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel corresponding to the ball joint being inspected.
  • Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect Ball Joint
  • Locate the ball joint and check for any visible signs of wear or damage.
  • Use a pry bar to gently lift the control arm and check for play in the ball joint.
  • If movement is detected, the ball joint needs to be replaced.
4. Replace Ball Joint (if necessary)
  • Remove the cotter pin and nut from the ball joint.
  • Use a ball joint separator tool to detach the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the ball joint from the control arm.
  • Install the new ball joint into the control arm and secure it with the nut and cotter pin.
  • Reattach the steering knuckle to the new ball joint.
5. Reassemble
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically 90-100 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat the process for the other side if necessary.
