Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical shorts while working.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels to access the steering components.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the rack by removing the universal joint bolt.
  • Detach the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a tie rod puller.
  • Remove the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out from under the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • With the rack removed, check the seals for damage or wear.
  • If the seals are damaged, replace them with a seal kit specific to the MK7 Golf.
  • Clean any debris from the steering rack housing before installing new seals.
  • Apply a light coat of power steering fluid to the new seals before installation to prevent pinching.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Position the repaired or new steering rack back into place and secure it with mounting bolts.
  • Reattach tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and torque to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30-40 Nm, but check the service manual).
  • Reconnect the steering column to the rack and secure the universal joint bolt.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid (usually CHF 202 or a similar low-viscosity fluid).
  • Check for any leaks around the newly installed seals and connections.
6. Test the System
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed the system of air.
  • Check the fluid level again and top off if necessary.
