Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, ratchet, extension bar, anti-seize lubricant, dielectric grease.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool if it was recently running.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Unscrew the bolts securing the engine cover using a socket wrench.
  • Lift the engine cover off carefully and set it aside.
3. Remove Ignition Coils
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil.
  • Unscrew the bolts holding the ignition coils in place using a socket wrench.
  • Gently pull each ignition coil out of the spark plug well.
4. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to remove the old spark plugs by turning counterclockwise.
  • Inspect the removed spark plugs for signs of wear or damage.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new spark plugs.
  • Hand-tighten the new spark plugs into the cylinder head.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs to the manufacturer's specified torque (usually around 22 lb-ft for VW engines).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil connectors.
  • Reinsert each ignition coil into the spark plug wells and secure them with bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil.
7. Reattach Engine Cover
  • Place the engine cover back onto the engine bay and secure it with the bolts removed earlier.
8. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure it is tight.
