Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake caliper tool (or C-clamp), torque wrench, brake cleaner, and a bungee cord or rope.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before working on electrical systems; allow the vehicle to cool down before working on brakes.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on which brake pads are being replaced.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands to ensure safety while working underneath.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts from the wheel.
  • Take off the wheel and set it aside.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and use a socket set to remove them.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Avoid stretching the brake line; use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension components.
5. Replace the Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note their orientation for installation of the new pads.
  • Compare the old pads with the new ones to ensure they match in size and shape.
  • Apply brake grease to the back of the new pads to prevent noise and ensure smooth operation.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old ones.
6. Compress the Brake Caliper Piston
  • Use a brake caliper tool or C-clamp to carefully compress the brake caliper piston back into the caliper housing. Ensure it is fully retracted to accommodate the new pads.
7. Reinstall the Brake Caliper
  • Position the caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor.
  • Reinsert and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 25-30 Nm, but always verify with the service manual).
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands and then torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 110 Nm).
