Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool before starting work on the cooling system.
2. Replace the Thermostat
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, coolant catch pan, gasket scraper
  • Drain the engine coolant into a catch pan by removing the drain plug from the radiator.
  • Remove any components obstructing access to the thermostat (e.g., air intake duct).
  • Unbolt the thermostat housing using a socket set and remove the old thermostat.
  • Clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat housing and engine block using a gasket scraper to remove any old gasket material.
  • Install the new thermostat ensuring it is oriented correctly and replace the gasket.
  • Bolt the thermostat housing back in place using the torque wrench to tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.
3. Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor
  • Tools Required: Socket set, pliers
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the coolant temperature sensor.
  • Unscrew the old coolant temperature sensor using a socket.
  • Apply a small amount of thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor to ensure a good seal.
  • Install the new coolant temperature sensor and reconnect the electrical connector.
4. Refill the Cooling System
  • Refill the engine with the appropriate coolant mixture (recommended by the manufacturer).
  • Run the engine with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens and coolant circulates, then top off the coolant if necessary.
  • Recheck for leaks around the thermostat and sensor.
