Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, ratchet, extension, gapping tool, anti-seize lubricant, dielectric grease.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool down before starting the procedure.
2. Remove Engine Cover (if applicable)
  • Locate the engine cover and remove any bolts or clips securing it.
  • Gently lift the cover off and set it aside.
3. Remove Ignition Coils
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil by pressing the tab and pulling upwards.
  • Use a socket to remove the bolts securing the ignition coils in place.
  • Carefully pull out each ignition coil from the spark plug well.
4. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Using a spark plug socket and ratchet, carefully unscrew each spark plug from the engine cylinder head.
  • Inspect the removed spark plugs for wear and damage.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Check the gap on the new spark plugs using a gapping tool, adjusting as necessary to the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the new spark plugs.
  • Carefully insert each new spark plug into the cylinder head and hand-tighten before using the socket to secure them.
  • Torque the spark plugs to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 22 lb-ft for VW).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots to prevent moisture ingress.
  • Reinsert each ignition coil into its respective spark plug well and secure it with the bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil until they click into place.
7. Reattach Engine Cover (if applicable)
  • Position the engine cover back onto the engine and secure it with any bolts or clips removed earlier.
8. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure it is tightened securely.
