Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, socket set, torque wrench, ball joint separator, hammer, grease gun, and safety goggles.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before working on electrical systems and ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface with the parking brake engaged.
2. Lift and Secure Vehicle
  1. Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels slightly (do not remove).
  3. Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame for safety.
  4. Remove the front wheels.
3. Remove Old Ball Joints
  1. Detach the Steering Knuckle:
    • Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut on the ball joint.
    • Use a ball joint separator tool to disconnect the steering knuckle from the ball joint.
  2. Remove the Ball Joint:
    • Locate the bolts securing the ball joint to the control arm.
    • Remove the bolts using a socket and ratchet.
    • Take out the old ball joint from the control arm.
4. Install New Ball Joints
  1. Position New Ball Joint:
    • Insert the new ball joint into the control arm.
    • Align the mounting holes.
  2. Secure New Ball Joint:
    • Install and tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically 45-65 Nm).
    • Reattach the steering knuckle to the ball joint, securing with the castle nut and inserting a new cotter pin.
5. Reassemble Vehicle
  1. Reinstall the front wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  2. Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the jack.
  3. Fully tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically 120 Nm).
  4. If applicable, use a grease gun to apply grease to the new ball joints through the zerks.
