Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid any electrical issues.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir and remove the cap.
  • If the fluid is low, add the recommended type of fluid (check owner’s manual for specifications).
  • If the fluid is dirty or foamy, proceed to flush and replace the fluid:
    1. Disconnect the return line from the power steering pump.
    2. Place a container to catch old fluid.
    3. Start the engine briefly to pump out old fluid, then turn off.
    4. Reconnect the return line and fill with new fluid.
3. Replace Worn Components
  • Tie Rod Ends and Ball Joints:

    1. Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands.
    2. Remove the wheel to access the suspension components.
    3. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end.
    4. Use a pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
    5. Repeat for the ball joint, removing it from its mount.
    6. Install new tie rod ends and ball joints, securing with new nuts and cotter pins.
  • Steering Rack Inspection/Replacement:

    1. Disconnect any electrical connectors and hoses from the steering rack.
    2. Remove the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe.
    3. Carefully slide the rack out from its mounting position.
    4. Install the new steering rack in reverse order, ensuring all connections are secure.
4. Reassemble and Test
  • Reattach the wheel and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel to ensure the noise is resolved and the vehicle steers smoothly.
