Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, O2 sensor socket, torque wrench, ratchet, multimeter.
  • Disconnect the battery's negative terminal to ensure safety.
  • Allow the engine to cool completely before starting work.
2. Locate the Oxygen Sensor
  • Identify the location of the oxygen sensor: The Volkswagen Golf typically has multiple sensors; the upstream sensor is located before the catalytic converter, while the downstream sensor is located after it.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands for better access if necessary.
3. Remove the Old Oxygen Sensor
  • Use the O2 sensor socket and ratchet to unscrew the oxygen sensor. Turn it counterclockwise until it is free.
  • Carefully pull the sensor out of the exhaust pipe, taking care not to damage the threads in the pipe.
4. Install the New Oxygen Sensor
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new oxygen sensor (if not pre-coated).
  • Insert the new oxygen sensor into the exhaust pipe and hand-tighten it.
  • Use the O2 sensor socket and torque wrench to tighten the sensor to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 30 Nm, but verify with a service manual).
5. Reconnect Wiring and Battery
  • Plug the oxygen sensor connector back into its harness.
  • Reconnect the battery’s negative terminal.
6. Reset the Check Engine Light
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear any fault codes related to the oxygen sensor and reset the check engine light.
