Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required:
    • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, jack and jack stands, socket set (including 12mm and 13mm sockets), torque wrench, oxygen sensor socket, pry bar, and safety glasses.
    • Parts Required: New catalytic converter, new exhaust gaskets, and new oxygen sensor (if needed).
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before beginning work. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Ensure the vehicle is stable and at a comfortable working height.
3. Remove the Old Catalytic Converter
  • Locate the catalytic converter along the exhaust system between the exhaust manifold and the muffler.
  • Remove any heat shields if present by unscrewing the bolts.
  • Disconnect the oxygen sensors from the catalytic converter using the oxygen sensor socket.
  • Unbolt the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe using the socket set. Retain the nuts and bolts if they are reusable.
  • Carefully remove the old catalytic converter from the exhaust system. You may need to wiggle it free or use a pry bar if it’s stuck.
4. Install the New Catalytic Converter
  • Position the new catalytic converter in place of the old one.
  • Align it with the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe, ensuring the gaskets are properly seated.
  • Bolt the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe, tightening the nuts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 25-30 Nm, but check vehicle specifications).
  • Reinstall any heat shields if removed.
5. Reconnect Oxygen Sensors
  • Install the oxygen sensors into the new catalytic converter. Ensure they are tightened to the specified torque (approximately 30 Nm).
  • Reconnect the wiring harness for the oxygen sensors.
6. Lower the Vehicle and Test
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature, checking for exhaust leaks around the new catalytic converter.
