Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Spark plug socket, ratchet wrench, torque wrench, extension bar, anti-seize compound, dielectric grease.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool down before proceeding.
2. Remove Ignition Coils
  1. Locate the ignition coils on top of the engine.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil by pressing the tab and pulling it off.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the ignition coils using the ratchet and spark plug socket.
  4. Carefully pull out each ignition coil from the spark plug well.
3. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  1. Use the spark plug socket with an extension to reach the spark plugs.
  2. Turn the socket counterclockwise to loosen and remove each spark plug.
  3. Inspect the removed spark plugs for wear and damage.
4. Install New Spark Plugs
  1. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plugs.
  2. Carefully thread each new spark plug into the cylinder head by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  3. Use the torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs to the manufacturer-recommended torque specification (typically around 22 lb-ft or 30 Nm for most VW applications).
5. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  1. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of each ignition coil boot.
  2. Reinsert each ignition coil into the spark plug well and secure them with the bolts.
  3. Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil until they click into place.
6. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure it is secure.
