Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: multimeter, jumper cables, socket set, wrench.
  • Ensure the vehicle is in park or neutral and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Wear safety gloves and eye protection.
2. Jump-Start the Vehicle
  1. Position the Vehicles: Place another vehicle with a functioning battery close enough for the jumper cables to reach both batteries.
  2. Connect Jumper Cables:
    • Connect one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
    • Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.
    • Connect one black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery.
    • Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle (away from the battery).
  3. Start the Donor Vehicle: Start the vehicle with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes.
  4. Start the Dead Vehicle: Attempt to start the RAV4. If it starts, allow it to run for at least 15-20 minutes.
  5. Disconnect Cables: Remove the jumper cables in reverse order of connection.
3. Battery Replacement (if necessary)
  1. Remove the Old Battery:

    • Disconnect the negative terminal first, followed by the positive terminal.
    • Remove any securing brackets or clamps holding the battery in place.
    • Carefully lift the battery out of the tray.
  2. Install the New Battery:

    • Place the new battery in the tray.
    • Secure it with brackets or clamps.
    • Connect the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.
4. Test the Charging System
  1. Start the vehicle and use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery terminals; it should read between 13.7 to 14.7 volts with the engine running.
  2. If the voltage is out of this range, the alternator may need to be inspected or replaced.
