my Toyota RAV4 XA40 (2013-2018) won't steer properly, what should I check

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
• Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.

2. Inspect Power Steering Fluid

• Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
• Remove the cap and check the fluid level; it should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
• If low, top off with the recommended power steering fluid (usually ATF Dexron III or equivalent).

3. Check for Leaks

• Visually inspect the power steering lines for any signs of wear, cracks, or leaks.
• If leaks are found, replace the damaged hoses or connections.
• Clean any spilled fluid thoroughly to prevent slipping.

4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)

• Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
• Remove the front wheels to access the steering components.
• Disconnect the inner tie rod ends from the steering rack.
• Unbolt and remove the steering rack from its mounting position.
• Install the new or rebuilt steering rack, ensuring proper alignment and torque specifications (generally around 30-40 ft-lbs).

5. Test Power Steering Pump

• Reconnect the power steering pump if disconnected.
• Start the engine and let it idle while turning the steering wheel left and right.
