Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Torque wrench
    • Spark plug gap tool
    • Ratchet extension
    • Screwdriver (if necessary for engine cover removal)
  • Parts Required:
    • New spark plugs (check specifications for correct type)
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Disconnect the battery before beginning the work to prevent electrical shorts.
    • Allow the engine to cool completely before working on it.
2. Remove Engine Cover (if applicable)
  • If the vehicle has an engine cover, remove it:
    • Locate the screws or fasteners securing the engine cover.
    • Use a screwdriver or socket to remove the screws.
    • Carefully lift the engine cover off and set it aside.
3. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket wrench with spark plug socket
  • Instructions:
    • Locate the ignition coil (if applicable) on top of each spark plug.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
    • Remove the bolt securing the ignition coil using a socket wrench.
    • Gently pull the ignition coil straight out to expose the spark plug.
    • Use a spark plug socket to remove the old spark plug by turning it counterclockwise.
4. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Tools Required:
    • Torque wrench
  • Instructions:
    • Check the gap on the new spark plugs using a gap tool and adjust if necessary to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 0.043 inches for the RAV4).
    • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plug (optional).
    • Install the new spark plug by hand to avoid cross-threading, then use the spark plug socket to tighten it.
    • Torque the spark plug to the manufacturer's specified value (usually around 13 lb-ft).
5. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Replace the ignition coil by inserting it over the new spark plug.
  • Secure it with the bolt and reconnect the electrical connector.
6. Reattach Engine Cover
  • If removed, place the engine cover back onto the engine and secure it with screws.
7. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
