Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands or ramps
    • Lug wrench
    • Socket set
    • C-clamp or brake caliper tool
    • Brake cleaner
    • Torque wrench
    • Safety glasses and gloves
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
    2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels slightly while the vehicle is still on the ground (do not remove them).
    3. Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands. Alternatively, use ramps.
    4. Remove the front wheels completely.
2. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Locate the caliper mounting bolts on the back of the caliper and remove them using a socket.
    2. Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor. Do not let it hang by the brake line; support it with a bungee cord or similar tool.
    3. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
3. Compress Caliper Piston
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to push the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This will create space for the new, thicker brake pads.
    2. Ensure that the piston is fully retracted and the brake fluid reservoir does not overflow.
4. Install New Brake Pads
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Apply brake lubricant to the back of the new brake pads and the caliper bracket where the pads will sit.
    2. Position the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
    3. Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and align it with the mounting holes.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and torque them to manufacturer's specifications (typically around 80 ft-lbs).
    2. Reattach the front wheels and torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to the specified torque (typically 76 ft-lbs).
    3. Lower the vehicle to the ground and pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads properly.
