Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Oil filter wrench
    • Oil catch pan
    • Funnel
    • Torque wrench
    • Shop rags
  • Parts Required:
    • New oil filter
    • New engine oil (5W-20 or as specified)
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Drain Old Oil
  • 1.1 Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to warm up the oil, which helps it drain better.
  • 1.2 Turn off the engine and secure the vehicle with wheel chocks.
  • 1.3 Locate the oil drain plug under the vehicle, typically at the bottom of the oil pan.
  • 1.4 Place the oil catch pan under the drain plug.
  • 1.5 Remove the drain plug using a socket wrench and allow the old oil to completely drain into the catch pan.
3. Replace Oil Filter
  • 2.1 Locate the oil filter; it is usually near the engine block.
  • 2.2 Use the oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Be cautious as it may still contain oil.
  • 2.3 Prepare the new oil filter by applying a thin layer of fresh oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter.
  • 2.4 Install the new oil filter by hand, tightening it until snug. Do not overtighten.
4. Add New Oil
  • 3.1 Once the old oil has completely drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specifications (typically 22 ft-lbs for RAV4).
  • 3.2 Locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine and remove it.
  • 3.3 Using the funnel, pour the new engine oil into the filler neck. The capacity is approximately 4.5 quarts with a filter change.
  • 3.4 Replace the oil filler cap securely.
5. Check Oil Level
  • 4.1 Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then turn it off and wait a few minutes.
  • 4.2 Check the oil level using the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary to reach the correct level.
