Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather the necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery for safety.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels using a lug wrench.
3. Inspect and Remove the Ball Joints
  • Locate the ball joint assembly on the control arm.
  • Remove the cotter pin (if present) from the castle nut using needle-nose pliers.
  • Use a socket wrench to remove the castle nut from the ball joint.
  • If necessary, use a ball joint separator tool to free the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
4. Install the New Ball Joints
  • Position the new ball joint into the control arm.
  • Reattach the steering knuckle to the ball joint and secure with the castle nut.
  • Insert a new cotter pin to secure the castle nut.
5. Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 76 lb-ft for Toyota RAV4).
  • Reconnect the battery.
