Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
  • Use wheel chocks for safety.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the RAV4 depending on which brakes are being serviced.
  • Secure with jack stands.
3. Remove Wheel
  • Using a socket wrench, remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel to access the brake components.
4. Inspect and Remove Brake Pads
  • Locate the brake caliper and remove the caliper mounting bolts using a socket set.
  • Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord or wire to avoid stress on the brake line.
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
5. Inspect and Replace Rotors (if necessary)
  • Check the rotors for wear; if they are below the minimum thickness or have significant scoring, replace them.
  • Remove the rotor by unscrewing the retaining screws and pulling it off the hub.
  • Install new rotors in reverse order of removal.
6. Install New Brake Pads
  • Apply brake grease to the back of the new brake pads to reduce noise.
  • Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
7. Reassemble Brake Components
  • Reposition the brake caliper over the new pads.
  • Tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically around 20-25 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the wheel and lug nuts, tightening to the correct torque (generally 75-90 ft-lbs).
8. Lower Vehicle
  • Carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground.
9. Test Brakes
  • Before driving, pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure proper pad seating and to restore brake pressure.
