Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, jack, jack stands, torque wrench, impact wrench (optional), pry bar.
  • Park the Toyota RAV4 on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Gather necessary tools and replacement shocks.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear end of the vehicle depending on which shocks are being replaced.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands to ensure safety while working.
3. Remove the Old Shocks
  • Front Shocks:

    1. Remove the wheel on the side you are working on using a lug wrench.
    2. Locate the top shock mount under the hood and remove the bolts using a socket wrench.
    3. Remove the lower bolt connecting the shock absorber to the suspension arm.
    4. Carefully pull the shock out from its mounting points.
  • Rear Shocks:

    1. Remove the rear wheel using a lug wrench.
    2. Locate the top shock mount under the rear cargo area or behind the wheel arch and remove the bolts.
    3. Remove the lower bolt connecting the shock absorber to the rear suspension.
    4. Pull the shock out from its mounting points.
4. Install the New Shocks
  • Front Shocks:

    1. Position the new shock absorber in place of the old one.
    2. Attach the lower bolt first and tighten to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 50-80 ft-lbs).
    3. Insert the top of the shock into the mount and secure it with bolts, tightening as specified.
  • Rear Shocks:

    1. Position the new shock absorber in place and insert the lower bolt, tightening to specifications.
    2. Attach the top of the shock into the mount and secure it with bolts, tightening as specified.
5. Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheels and tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Carefully lower the vehicle from the jack stands using the jack.
6. Final Check
  • Inspect the installation to ensure all bolts are tightened and check for any leaks around the new shocks.
  • Verify that the vehicle is at the correct height and that the shocks are properly seated.
