Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, jack stands, floor jack, pry bar, rubber mallet, and impact wrench (optional).
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely lifted. Always use jack stands when working under the vehicle.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a floor jack to lift the vehicle at the designated lifting points.
  • Securely place jack stands under the vehicle to ensure stability.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use a socket set to remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel, exposing the shock absorber and suspension components.
4. Remove the Old Shock Absorber
  • Front Shocks:

    1. Locate the upper shock mount, usually accessible from the engine compartment.
    2. Use a socket to remove the upper nuts from the shock mount.
    3. At the bottom, remove the bolt securing the shock to the lower control arm using a socket wrench.
    4. Carefully pull the shock absorber out from the mounting points.
  • Rear Shocks:

    1. Remove the lower bolt securing the shock to the rear axle.
    2. Then, remove the upper bolt from the shock mount at the top of the wheel well.
    3. Pull the shock out of its mounting position.
5. Install the New Shock Absorber
  • Front Shocks:

    1. Position the new shock absorber into the mounting points.
    2. Insert and hand-tighten the lower bolt into the control arm.
    3. Secure the upper mount by placing the nuts back and tightening them with a socket.
  • Rear Shocks:

    1. Position the new shock absorber into place.
    2. Insert and hand-tighten the upper bolt first, then the lower bolt into the axle.
    3. Tighten both bolts with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 40-50 ft-lbs for upper and lower mounts).
6. Reassemble
  • Reattach the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 76 ft-lbs for the RAV4).
7. Final Inspection
  • Double-check all bolts for proper torque.
  • Ensure that the new shocks are installed correctly and that there are no obstructions.
