Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Use a socket set to remove any screws or bolts securing the engine cover.
  • Gently lift off the engine cover and set it aside.
3. Access Spark Plugs
  • Locate the ignition coils (or spark plug wires) on top of the engine.
  • If applicable, remove the bolts securing the ignition coils using a socket wrench.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils by pressing on the tab and pulling them off.
4. Remove Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to carefully unscrew each spark plug from the cylinder head. Turn counterclockwise to loosen.
  • Inspect the removed spark plugs for wear or damage.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Check the gap of the new spark plugs using a feeler gauge, adjusting as necessary to match the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 0.043 inches for RAV4).
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads (optional, as some plugs come pre-coated).
  • Install the new spark plugs by threading them in by hand first, then tighten them with the spark plug socket to the specified torque (approximately 13 lb-ft).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Reconnect the ignition coils to the spark plugs and secure them with bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil, ensuring they click into place.
7. Replace Engine Cover
  • Position the engine cover back onto the engine and secure it with screws or bolts.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
