Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the rear of the vehicle.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands for safety.
  • Remove the rear wheels by fully unscrewing the lug nuts.
3. Remove Brake Components
  • Remove the brake caliper by unscrewing the caliper mounting bolts (typically 14mm or 17mm).
  • Support the caliper with a bungee cord or rope to prevent stress on the brake line.
  • Take off the brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • If necessary, remove the brake caliper bracket by unscrewing its mounting bolts.
4. Inspect and Clean
  • Inspect the brake pads for wear indicators; replace if thickness is below the manufacturer’s specifications (usually 3mm or less).
  • Check the rotors for scoring or warping; replace if necessary.
  • Use brake cleaner to thoroughly clean the rotor surface and caliper components.
  • Clean the caliper slide pins and lubricate them with high-temperature brake grease.
5. Install New or Repaired Components
  • If the brake pads are worn, install new ones. Ensure they are the correct type for your RAV4 model.
  • Reinstall the caliper bracket if removed.
  • Secure the caliper back over the new pads and tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's torque specifications (typically around 20-25 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
6. Lower the Vehicle and Finalize
  • Carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque (usually 75-80 ft-lbs).
  • Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the pads against the rotors before driving.
