1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Measuring Back Pressure
  • Tools Required: Back pressure gauge
  • Locate the oxygen sensor upstream of the catalytic converter and remove it.
  • Insert the back pressure gauge into the oxygen sensor port.
  • Start the engine and allow it to idle, then increase engine RPM to about 2,500 for 2 minutes.
  • Record the back pressure reading. It should be below 2.5 psi at idle and below 4.0 psi at 2,500 RPM.
3. Temperature Test

  • With the engine running, aim the infrared thermometer at the exhaust pipe just before the catalytic converter and take note of the temperature.
