Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Oil filter wrench
    • Oil catch pan
    • Funnel
    • Ratchet
    • Torque wrench
    • Rags or shop towels
  • Parts Required:
    • Engine oil (5W-20 synthetic recommended)
    • New oil filter
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the engine is cool before starting the oil change.
    • Use gloves to protect hands from oil.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a hydraulic jack to lift the front of the RAV4.
  • Secure with jack stands to ensure stability.
3. Drain Old Oil
  • Place the oil catch pan under the oil pan's drain plug.
  • Using the socket set, remove the drain plug and allow old oil to completely drain into the pan.
  • Replace the drain plug once the oil has fully drained, and torque to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30 ft-lbs).
4. Replace Oil Filter
  • Locate the oil filter; use the oil filter wrench to remove the old filter.
  • Apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber gasket of the new oil filter.
  • Install the new oil filter by hand until snug, then tighten it according to specifications (usually hand-tight plus 3/4 turn).
5. Add New Oil
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap.
  • Using a funnel, pour in the new engine oil (approximately 5.5 quarts).
  • Replace the oil filler cap securely.
6. Check Oil Level
  • Start the engine for a few minutes to allow the new oil to circulate.
  • Turn off the engine, wait a few minutes, then check the oil level using the dipstick.
  • Add more oil if necessary, ensuring the level is within the recommended range.
7. Clean Up
  • Properly dispose of the old oil and oil filter at a recycling center.
  • Remove tools from the engine bay, and lower the vehicle.
