Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and supplies: OBD-II scanner, socket set, oil filter wrench, engine oil (5W-30), new oil filter, serpentine belt (if needed), timing chain/belt (if applicable), and safety gloves.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool before starting any work.
2. Change Engine Oil and Filter
  • Locate the oil drain plug under the vehicle and place a drain pan underneath.
  • Remove the drain plug using a socket set and allow the oil to completely drain.
  • Remove the old oil filter using the oil filter wrench, ensuring the rubber O-ring comes off with it.
  • Install the new oil filter by applying a small amount of new oil to the rubber O-ring, then tightening it by hand.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and torque it to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 30 lb-ft).
  • Add new engine oil through the oil filler cap, using the correct type and amount as specified in the owner’s manual (usually around 5 quarts for the RAV4).
  • Start the engine and check for leaks around the oil filter and drain plug.
3. Inspect and Replace Serpentine Belt (if necessary)
  • Loosen the tensioner using a socket set to relieve tension and remove the serpentine belt.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, fraying, or wear; replace if necessary.
  • Install the new belt by routing it according to the belt routing diagram (usually found under the hood).
  • Reapply tension on the tensioner to secure the belt in place.
4. Check Timing Chain/Belt (if applicable)
  • Remove any necessary covers to access the timing chain/belt.
  • Inspect for wear or looseness; if there are signs of damage, replace the timing chain/belt as per manufacturer specifications.
  • Reassemble covers and ensure all bolts are torqued to specifications.
