Solution
1. Preparation
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Raise the rear of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
2. Remove Driveshaft
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, universal joint puller
  • Remove the bolts securing the driveshaft to the rear differential and the transmission.
  • Support the driveshaft with one hand while removing the last bolt to prevent it from falling.
  • Carefully slide the driveshaft out of the transmission and set it aside.
3. Inspect and Replace U-Joints
  • Tools Required: U-joint press or universal joint puller, grease, clean rags
  • Remove the retaining clips from the U-joint caps using pliers.
  • Use the U-joint press to push out the old U-joint from the yoke.
  • Clean the yoke surfaces and apply a thin layer of grease to the new U-joint caps.
  • Install the new U-joint by pressing it into place and ensuring it's seated properly.
  • Reinstall the retaining clips securely to hold the U-joint in position.
4. Reinstall Driveshaft
  • Align the driveshaft with the transmission and rear differential, ensuring that the U-joint is properly seated in the yoke.
  • Reinstall the bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 40-50 ft-lbs, check the service manual for exact values).
  • Double-check that all connections are tight and secure.
5. Lower Vehicle and Test Drive
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
  • Conduct a test drive to ensure that the vibrations and noises have been resolved and that the vehicle operates smoothly.
