Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, ratchet, extension bar, feeler gauge, anti-seize lubricant.
  • Parts Required: New spark plugs (ensure they match OEM specifications).
  • Ensure the engine is completely cool to avoid burns.
2. Remove Engine Cover (if applicable)
  • Locate the engine cover and remove any bolts or fasteners securing it.
  • Gently lift off the engine cover and set it aside for access to the spark plugs.
3. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Identify the spark plug location (usually near the top of the engine).
  • Use the spark plug socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Turn counterclockwise until free.
  • Carefully pull the ignition coil (if applicable) away from each spark plug to access them.
4. Inspect and Prepare New Spark Plugs
  • Check the new spark plugs for any visible defects.
  • Use a feeler gauge to measure and adjust the gap of each new spark plug to match manufacturer specifications (typically around 0.043 inches for the RAV4).
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of each new spark plug.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Insert each new spark plug into its respective hole and hand-tighten to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten each spark plug to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 13 lb-ft).
  • Reconnect the ignition coils securely.
6. Reinstall Engine Cover
  • Place the engine cover back on and secure it with bolts or fasteners.
  • Ensure everything is reconnected properly.
7. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure it is secured.
