Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid electrical issues.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, jack stands, and a steering rack removal tool.
  • Place the vehicle on jack stands and remove the front wheels for better access.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack by removing the bolts securing it.
  • Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a tie rod puller.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering rack, ensuring to catch any leaking fluid in a drain pan.
  • Unbolt and carefully remove the steering rack from its mounts.
3. Inspect and Repair
  • Check the seals and boots of the steering rack for damage.
  • If the seals are damaged, replace them with new ones. This may involve disassembling the steering rack further.
  • If the steering rack is severely damaged, consider replacing the entire unit.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Torque wrench.
  • Position the repaired or new steering rack back into its mountings.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and torque them to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Reattach the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and secure them with the appropriate torque settings.
  • Reconnect the steering column to the steering rack.
5. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate type of power steering fluid as specified in the owner's manual.
  • Start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level and top off as necessary.
